It’s National Doughnut Day. Here’s where to get a free one today

Today is National Doughnut Day, a food holiday created in 1938 to honor “Donut Lassies,” women volunteers in the Salvation Army who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.
In honor of the holiday, a handful of San Diego County doughnut shops are giving away free pastry orbs this morning, and the Salvation Army itself is doing a doughnut-eating contest and giveaway aboard the USS Midway Museum. Here’s where to go:
Dodo Bird Donuts
This newly opened artisan bake shop, owned by Paradisaea restaurant owners Eric and Zoe Kleinbub, will give away one free doughnut to every customer who works in, or has worked, in any public service. They’ll also be offering made-to-order cake doughnuts with choice of six homemade flavored-sugar toppings. 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. today. 369 Bird Rock Ave, La Jolla. dodobirddonuts.com
Randy’s Donuts
L.A.-based Randy’s Donuts, which opened its first San Diego County shop last month, will give away one free classic doughnut to every customer from 6 a.m. to noon today. Also, in honor of Pride Month, Randy’s is selling Pride Flag Donuts, which are raised doughnuts with vanilla icing and Pride flag rainbow-stripe icing, priced at $3.75. Proceeds from Pride Flag Donuts will be donated to the San Diego LGBT Community Center. 3737 Murphy Canyon Road, San Diego. randysdonuts.com/locations/san-diego/
