Today is National Doughnut Day, a food holiday created in 1938 to honor “Donut Lassies,” women volunteers in the Salvation Army who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.

In honor of the holiday, a handful of San Diego County doughnut shops are giving away free pastry orbs this morning, and the Salvation Army itself is doing a doughnut-eating contest and giveaway aboard the USS Midway Museum. Here’s where to go:

Dodo Bird Donuts

This newly opened artisan bake shop, owned by Paradisaea restaurant owners Eric and Zoe Kleinbub, will give away one free doughnut to every customer who works in, or has worked, in any public service. They’ll also be offering made-to-order cake doughnuts with choice of six homemade flavored-sugar toppings. 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. today. 369 Bird Rock Ave, La Jolla.

Randy’s Donuts

L.A.-based Randy’s Donuts, which opened its first San Diego County shop last month, will give away one free classic doughnut to every customer from 6 a.m. to noon today. Also, in honor of Pride Month, Randy’s is selling Pride Flag Donuts, which are raised doughnuts with vanilla icing and Pride flag rainbow-stripe icing, priced at $3.75. Proceeds from Pride Flag Donuts will be donated to the San Diego LGBT Community Center. 3737 Murphy Canyon Road, San Diego.

Krispy Kreme

Krispy Kreme locations will give away one free doughnut of any flavor per person today. While the classic glazed doughnuts are the chain’s top-sellers, customers can also choose specialty flavors like Chocolate Kreme Pie or Strawberries and Kreme. The chain is also offering a $2 deal, where customers who buy a dozen glazed doughnuts can buy a dozen more for just $2. For directions to locations in San Diego, Oceanside and Chula Vista, visit

Dunkin’ locations will be giving away one free doughnut with any drink purchase today. Offer excludes fancy and specialty doughnut varietiess and espresso shot beverages. For San Diego County locations, visit

USS Midway Museum

The Salvation Army will host a World Donut Eating Championship aboard this retired aircraft carrier and the public is invited to come, watch and enjoy a free doughnut provided by BakeMark. Donations will benefit Salvation Army programs. Admission is free. 9:30 to 10 a.m. aboard the USS Midway, 910 N. Harbor Drive, San Diego.
