Q&A with Greg Daunoras: Pacific Beach Town Council President
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in the Chicago area. I attended Northern Illinois University where I earned a bachelor’s degree in communications. Immediately upon graduation from NIU at the age of 22, I moved to San Diego to accept a civilian job with the U.S. Navy.
What do you do for a living?
For the last 18 years, I am a self-employed real estate broker, and for the last 12 years, I am a community college instructor who teaches real estate. I teach at both Mesa College and Grossmont-Cuyamaca College. 16 years ago, I earned a master’s degree in public administration from National University, and eight years ago, I earned a master’s degree in education from San Diego State University.
Are you married? Got kids?
I am married to my wife Ryoko for many years and, unfortunately, we have no children.
Give us a brief history of your involvement with Pacific Beach governance.
We moved to Pacific Beach 10 years ago, within a week, I became a general member of the PB Town Council! I served on the PB Planning Group from 2009 to 2013 and got elected to the Town Council Board of Directors in 2011.
If you could wave a magic wand and make a wish for PB come true, that wish would be:
My wish for Pacific Beach is for this community to retain (as much as possible) its original character; a diverse community of small businesses, families, singles, young and old to remain in their residences for decades and to be involved with this wonderful community.
What is your favorite thing about PB?
My favorite thing about PB (personally) is the mild weather and temperatures, I could never live where the summer heat gets above 90 degrees! Believe it or not, the night and morning low clouds do not bother me at all.
What is your top priority for PB improvement?
My top priority for improvement for PB is to increase home ownership and, hopefully, for everyone to be employed with a livable wage. I also hope the prices of homes do not increase much higher so that more people can purchase here.
I am very concerned about the growing number of short-term rentals, in particular, in the residential areas of single-family homes. This, of course, makes housing less affordable and less available for young families to purchase. In the long run, we might have less teachers, less businesses, less volunteers and less long-term residents.
What is one thing you want people to know about the PB Town Council?
I would like the local residents to know that the PB Town Council has been a non-profit charity in our community since 1951. We have a rich history of community service and we hold monthly meetings on the third Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Crown Point Elementary School (4033 Ingraham St.) to discuss community issues and to communicate the views of our residents to the appropriate elected officials in the City, County, State and Federal government(s).
We also encourage support for our local businesses! I would also like the readers to know that the PB Town Council is committed to working with and supporting our other local community groups such as: Discover PB (Business Improvement District), PB Woman’s Club, PB Planning Group and, of course, our local schools.
Do you have a favorite spot for relaxing in PB?
My favorite spot to relax in PB, aside from the Boardwalk, would be roof-top dining at any number of our fine local restaurants.
How would you spend a $5,000 gift to PB — no strings attached?
Since we are a non-profit, any money gifted, granted or earned by us is immediately turned around in donations back to the community. My favorite donation(s) is giving scholarship money to our high-achieving students and to our local first-responders.
